When i'm not playing paintball or at a concert somewhere in thew country (maybe even out of it), I spend my time playing soccer. I've been playing for about 12 years and do it mostly for fun, but also play club because I have some talent.
Today, however, I was playing co-ed soccer. Most of our games are at 3 in the afternoon, and we have rules such as girl goals are 2 points instead of 1, and men can only score 2 goals per game.
But today, the Cowboys play at 3, so we have to play at 9 in the ****ing morning. Needless to say, since I am 16 and HUMAN, I was a alttile cranky, but a good sport. And even better, my best friends co-ed team was on the field next to us, so it wasnt all bad.
Our game was very friendly, but the other game was nasty. Our fields were muddy as hell and wet, and the major league rule is NO SLIDE TACKLING (old people play in the league, oldest is 55). Apparently something went down and a fight broke out. Our game was at half time, so I immediately run over on the field to stop the growing fight. I noticed my friend get clodked in the face (which was really funny, btw.) so i grab the guy that did it and pulled him out of the fight, not hitting him at all. I turn him around to tell him to calm do...WHAM!

A ref punched me in the face, almost breaking my nose. I did not use force with this player, I wasnt going to hurt hi....WHAM! Again in the face, in the jaw.
I immediately start to defend myself and talk to ref out of our dimension for close to a minute....so I won the fight:clap:. League officials showed up, got multiple accounts, and are planning to take my side for my "fight" with the ref.

So I come to the Legion to ask....was he doing his job? I know the NFL ref in the Packers game in week 16 (maybe 17) used force with a player, but didnt brick him in the face.

I don't care what sport it is, a ref should not assault a player. He should have been doing exactly what you were doing.

Agreed.

I love the refs for doing their "jobs" in any sport.

In paintball, ref and players should not touch eachother unless a medical emergency.

In your soccer case,... refs should break the fight,... but NEVER should ANYONE for any reason "throw the first blow". Taking the defence is a key indicator that the person attacking is ALWAYS at fault.

The ref should not be allowed to judge a game, period. Make an example, no matter who they are. Sports (especially pros) let things go way beyond control. League (pick-up or not) should have a ban-stick they feel very comfortable touching the guilty with.

I used to compete in Kempo. I over extended a punch once and knocked another competetor out cold. My "school" agreed to my punishment to forfit my rankings in the tourney & travel to that students "school" for 1 month on his night classes and train with them (ie: a punching bag).
Knockouts happen, and the league was thrilled to see 2 schools taking the punishment WAY beyond what they suggested. But the league should have wanted to toss me from the tourney no matter what. I lost control, someone got hurt. I should have to pay for my loss of control.

I am infact filing charges with the league, but I don't want to bring authorities into it quiet just yet.

Get that ******* for assault, and you're a minor so it should be worse for him.

Wow, that makes me mad just reading it. Got any witnesses? I would make sure he never refs again, if not file charges against him in court.

So I would need to stand there and let two players beet the **** out of each other and not stop it. Oh yeah, that's going to fly.....

I wouldn't hurt a player in a fight on purpose, but I damn well am not going to let them clobber each other on OUR field. Go out in the damn county road for that and i will sell the tickets for you...

And you take a swing at me, minor or not, i will sit you on your ***. It's not assault, even with a minor, for defending yourself....

Now the ref in your case, yeah he's a **** and deserves to be sued and/or charged with assault...

Wow! I've coached soccer at all levels up through high school varsity. I'm sure it's happened before, but in 23 some odd years of playing, coaching and watching local soccer, I have never seen a fist fight, although I did see a spectator pull a shotgun out of his car during a Mexican league match in Santa Maria, CA. The incident you got involved in was the referee's fault in the first place. The other game should never have gotten to the point of a brawl, that's what the cards are for.

Normally, I would say that when players "empty the bench" they are also subject to punitive measures, but certainly not a punch in the face from a referee. In this particular case, supervision seems to have been so far out of hand that you had the right to defend your friend in a non-violent manner. Do you play full 11 man (and woman) teams? How many refs officiate each game? Was the ref that hit you friendly with members of the other team? I've seen that **** effect calls and outcomes. It sounds like the league needs to get rid of that ref right away and review the quailifications of all it's referees.

Dude the ref punched you and you are asking if he is right? If there is not more to the story I would press charges.
Are you the smallest guy involved here? Cause I am kind short and I am always the first guy to get punched when standing next to all my 6ft friends.
