I was doing it before it was cool.

But honestly, that's a pretty biased article, i mean there are atheists with legit reasons to be atheists, and they live in harmony with those that believe in a deity, and then there are others like those discussed in that article.

To be perfectly honest it took years before i was actually atheist, and it was a really tough struggle, probably mainly why i don't really like that article, it seems like it lumps all atheists into one group.

It was not actually a jab at the belief, more that I find SA to be very quick and pretty accurate as spotting (and subsequently) mocking the trends that pop up. Especially their own that eventually filter down...

Who am I kidding I REALLY like the Photoshop Phriday's too

Oh no, i wasn't saying you were taking a jab at atheists or anything. I completely get what they're saying, but they just started talking about atheism in general which i didn't really like, because it seemed like he was applying it to all atheists. I completely agree about the whole trend thing, i know people that have started following it because it's cool, and others that have said it simply because they don't care, and i think that both reasons are stupid as hell.

It's the people who ARDENTLY take a side (whatever that is) and defend it unflinchingly without being able to coherently tell the other side why (other than they are all stupid).

THAT was what I felt the article captured.

Just look around and see if you can find that mentality in people who don't like Mags?

Yeah, i understood that completely, and loved the article for that, even got a few chuckles, it was one of those articles (for me) where you both love it and aren't too thrilled about it.

The problem is, as with any faith based group, atheism's "mainstream" has fallen away from it's core believers, so when he discusses "atheism in general" he's not far off base.

Just as Christianity has moved to new and trendy mega churches, starbucks and all, they are now representative of the vast majority of "believers". It makes no difference to most outside the community, or inside most of it, that they are simply modifying something to make it trendy, and profitable, they're the most visible, therefore they're it.

Same thing with atheism....and Islam...and Judaism.... Whenever a very large group makes something trendy(and let's face it, going off to holy war has become a status symbol in the middle east as much as going to a rock concert at church has here....), the trendy ones are going to stick out like sore thumbs...

You actually make a good point, i went to one of those churches where they play rock music to worship and everything (i grew up catholic and looking into the bible myself, not used to it) and i went to one of their youth group things and wouldn't you know it, i knew more than them about their own religion. I didn't rub it in their face or anything, i just thought to myself "what's the point in being so involved in this church if you don't even know what you're worshipping?"
