View Full Version : Pump mag problems...

Ok, let me start off by saying this: i'm an idiot :loser:. My first gun may have been a mag, and out of all the 4 guns i have, they are all mags, but i'm still in idiot when it comes to mags. excuse my bad english and obvious statements.

Just got Jay's new pump kit, and i must say, it was really well made. the wait made me very anxious, and when i got it, all i had were problems. so, this is what happened:

When not working well:

I threw it onto my pump milled ULE body and rail (by Rainman), pumped it a few times to see how it was, and it was smooth as butter. Aired up the gun, but it wouldnt shoot... turns out i was suppose to cut the blue bumper so it fits into the hole of the wave spring, rather then sticking the whole bumper in it. got that done ( i think), but the pumping was sticky. i cleaned the kit down and got rid of all the metal scraps and dirt, then oiled every part that has metal on metal friction; brought out my gold cup, oiled the pump rod (especially the area at the end where it hits the bolt), the pump spacer, and the milling of the body and rail. aired the gun up again, but the pumping was only a bit smoother :wall::wall:. it would pump very smooth until it hit the bolt - the handle would just stick:

^^ stuck when pumped all the way back

when the handle didnt stick, i knew the bolt wasnt pushed back. when it did stick, i'd have to force it forward, but i knew the bolt was pushed back. whats up?

When it is sort of working:

When the bolt actually gets pushed back, i'm able to hear a leaking inside the valve. on my pistol mag, i get around 20 shots off a 12 gram. on my pump mag, i get around 15 shots. i believe the leak is causing this decrease in shots. is my powertube spacer too large? i read somewhere that i should grab a powertube spacer kit, but i dont know the purpose of getting one...

when shooting a mini hopper of balls, nearly 70% got chopped - talk about a paint blender :minigun:. i'm shooting very slow, and even with a foamie bolt. the paint is around 5 months old (moved around once a week and in room temperature), but it doesn't chop in my pistol mag, which uses the hard nose level 7 bolt. why is this?

problems problems problems... it's been pretty frustrating, and i've gotten to the point of just selling this nightmare and grabbing a phantom. but i dont want that to happen :(.

forgot to mention, everything i said above happened a couple days since i got the kit. after chatting with jay about the problems, i cleaned up the gun, relubed it, and it perfectly worked! besides the leaking inside the valve, the pumping was smooth and i thought all the troubles were gone.

the next day, i took it out to the field, and darn it, the problems came back :grr:.that made me totally confused because it was just working the day before. i shot a little bit with some fresh balls (midnights), but it was still chopping really bad. now the gun is just sitting in the corner with no love :(.

I dont know whats wrong with the pump mag but the easiest way to deal with a problem is first remove a few of the variables and work your way back.

take it back to semi and make sure it is shooting consistently at atleast 285fps.

Once its working in semi, add the kit and see what happens.

Try to bend the pump rod up a little where it supposed to contacts the bolt face. It may be hitting the lip than sliding under the bolt lip causing the sticking....

works fine in semi, shoots like it is suppose to.

i'll have to give this a try. isnt the pump rod suppose to hit the lip of the bolt?

Great, glad you got it working.

Im looking into picking up one of Jay's tactical pump kits, so i need to get some parts together.

the tactical pump kits are looking very cool, but i mean, you'll have to have a tac-one rail to make it even better. jay's work is top quality, and also his customer service

As you found out it's supposed to hit the bolt lip face. Yours was sliding under neath. (Just a little clarity for anyone else who may look at this thread and be confused) . Great looking pumpmag

ah, thats the word. when you said it was probably hitting underneath the bolt, it did make a lot of sense that it was getting stuck. so yea, if anyone has the same issue, this thread should help you out, but i hope its not like that on all the kits. Thanks flyingpootang:wthumpup:
