View Full Version : Might have made a good steal on an ego.

Guy at the field was selling an '05 for 300$. Had a few little upgrades, but needed eyes and "had a messed up ram sleeve".
Alright, I've been looking for something semi-dependable that will work with our air situation(mag is not an option right now....), I figure I can fix it and still come in at about 400$.
He brings it by to me tonight, and it turns out he has broken the QEV's off in the ram sleeve. They got them out with an easy out, but the threads or shot. He also has a pair of QEVs to fix it, but they're the wrong size. There cocker QEV's.....:slap:.
Now, Ten minutes later with the only tap I have that will work(it's an 8-32), I have new threads cut. Tomorrow I'll run a bit and 10-32 down it at work, and...well no more messed up ram sleeve. Basically.....need a 30$ set of eyes to have it rolling.
I'm happy to say the least. Now if I can figure out how to mod one of the etek star frames to it....

A pic. The frame has actually been milled to fit an etek as well, and suprisingly is not a dremel hack job, but was apparently done on a cnc machine...

$300-$350 is about the going rate for working '05 Egos. I wouldn't exactly call that a steal.
You should still be able to come out on top. Just make you advertise it as a "PL" or an "Ice Cuba" or some such nonsense.

Looks good. But $300-350ish isn't a major steal. And you still have to put money into it :(
But you gets a banana for a decent steal

I've never seen a working '05 with a star frame go for less than 400$, even on the garbage BST of the nation....
Oh well, don't plan to sell it, needed something working :D

From what I was told, the 05 and 06's are the better, more durable of the Ego lines. The later models do not have the ram sleeves, which I understand lead to screwed up ram bores.

He gave me the detents today, turns out they are the kill magnetic ones.
I'm picking up an 07 board and am going to find out how hard a mod it might be to get it in...

About 6 months ago I got an 05 ego and a halo for $300...all working
It was purchased from a friend though...so not sure if that counts.
They are really good gun's though.

I know they occasionally go that low, hell I know where there's an 06 sitting for 300 with a loader on it....
Like I said, I'm picking up an 07 style board to see what I can do with it about modding it to the '06 frame. If that doesn't work I'm going to nab an etek frame and put it on...

I see it has a drk frame.
Why put an etek frame on it?

The star frame they came out with is the 07/08 style board, much MUCH nicer trigger pull imo...
Honestly I may find an aftermarket frame with a switch and try that first, I want to lay hands on on fo the star's first an see which one I like more. I just really like having the LCD board.

The 2 real differences with the older ego boards and the newer ones is:
The pitch of the micro switch (which maybe why you like the "feel" more since the switch pushes the trigger forward instead of up and forward, which in some cases eliminates the need for the return spring in frames)
The micro switch side mounting hole. 2005 board hole is at the top of the switch, later ones moved it to the bottom. Not too much more to the moving of the hole than a marketing thing. New hole location = new frame layout = new board design = Agglets have to call Viture for a brand new board:oneear:

FYI: I dont shoot Egos,..... I work with some of the boards,.. thats where I get my input from.

The 05 an 06's didn't have physical switches, they had optical switches. I hate the optical switches(i'm not unfamiliar with these from several projects). The etek to me has a much more tactile trigger that is much easier to fall inot a rhythm on.
I like the 07/08 boards with the dual system(and disable the optical), or the etek style personally. I may try the afterrmarket microswitched boards, but I also enjoy having an LCD interface to work with.

Ye I was gonna say the 05's an 06's have optical switches.
I prefer a physical switch as well. The optical isn't as responsive on the return and I don't feel like fidgeting with magnets.
That and there is the issue of paint getting on the optical in the middle of a game. I have some coated on mine as we speek...been there for awhile.
Ye if you want an etek frame so you can use an 07 board with the switch.. I would look into after-market boards first.. prolly come out a little cheaper, though most (or all) of after-market boards for the 05 use an LED interface.
The 07 frames do feel nice though, they are skinnier if I recall correctly. So you can wrap your hand around it better.
