2 of my friends do muay tai...it's bad ***. They both whopped a** in the fights they had. I wish I had gotten into it when they did. It's a really cool sport with a lot of discipline

My wife is a second degree black belt in Ti Kwon Do and a blue belt in Shotokan...but I don't think that counts as mixed martial arts....still ,she can kick my ***!

Back in my younger days I fought AAU Ji Dukwan style Tae Kwon Do as a 1st Dan black belt....
I think if I tried to do any of that today, I would end up hurting myself.... badly.:freak:

not a fan of MMA, i watch it to pass time, nothing exciting about watching two guys hump each other on the ground. I find boxing much more exciting. Plus if you try your mma stuff on a guy and his buddy is there dont think your not gonna get a tap dance on your head while you squirm around for position on the ground. I am a purest, Tae kwon do in its true form - traditional.

My younger sister is way into MMA, and Muey Tai, and Jujutsu, and Esreama, and some other martial arts, actually I think she is just into fighting. Her MMA instructer guy(who plays paintball and drops a ton at my shop) keeps trying to get me to go to one of his classes but I never have time. Someday maybe.

You must have MMA confused with something else.? Maybe Greco-Roman wrestling?
MMA is a mix of martial arts, to include traditional boxing, kickboxing(muay thai), tae kwon do, judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, etc etc.
And as it goes, MMA is set to surpass boxing in gate receipts and Pay-Per-View proceeds as well. The masses are watching MMA over boxing. Boxing has just gotten boring.
So Im not sure what gave you the impression that MMA is "two guys humping each other on the ground". This statement only means to me that you havent seen much MMA that ends with your typical TKO/KO.(Jackson vs. Lidell, Silva vs. Franklin 1 & 2, Serra vs. Pierre, Pierre vs. Hughes)---and those were all title fights.

yes there are knock outs but generally 80% of the participants want to go to the ground and hug for position waiting for an opening of a monkey paw, arm bar triangle or some version of a naked or covered choke, I have been aware nad watche mma since ufc 1 and the reign of gracie, however, 9/10 i find it boring to tackle someone and ground and pound, im not saying it doesnt take skill by no means, i just find it boring as hell to watch if they go into that mode. I had 5 full contact fights in the ISKA, full contact rules with leg kicks and knees legal... i lost the last one as after getting knocked down i didnt want to get back up....i fought up a weight class or two due to my guy backing out at the rumble in jackson tennessee.
Its great to watch at times, impracticle is most of it in a real situation as i mentioned before. That is an opionion of mine shared by many and shunned by the bastardization of true forms of martial arts ie jui jitsu, TKD, Shotakon, Wado ryu you name it. MMA is doing well, I still say 5-10 years from now they will still be having mma matches, but the traditional will alwasy outnumber.
for a +2, the original format of MMA as per UFC was to face each discipline in its pure form against one another to find the ultimate form and or fighter which can vary. It is now a group of atheletes that may have trained 4-5 years a few strikes, how to tackle, a few submissions, and how to do basic boxing techniques.
I know many many more folks that share this view then the prior, however we all watch it to see when there is a knockout, its like watching aboring *** nascar race to see the wrecks.
my 2 cents

IDK, I cannot get into MMA for one reason. Being a wrestler, I am used to the concept of a pin. I see these douche bags on TV stay on their backs and flail their arms and legs. If they would institute a pin I would watch, because people would need to work to the belly, build up, escape or reverse, and work combos or submissions. That would be great. It would be fast paced martial arts action while on foot, and a combo of freestyle, folkstyle, judo, et. al. while on the ground. I would watch that. I hate watching them sit like turtles on their backs. I have seen it greatly slow down the action.
Just my :twocents:

It has become more clear to me. You said it, and I didnt fully realize how much of a purist you are. It doesnt surprise me that the people you are surrounded by share your view.
I actually watch MMA to see who is the best at mixing the best techniques of their respective arts. To think that any 1 art is superior to another would be silly. All have their weaknesses(and strengths).
An occassional KO is nice to see, no denying that. But watching technical practitioners of the ground game can be just as exciting as the stand-up.
MMA is in its infancy compared to other combat sports. Is it sloppier than each individual art shown individually? Sure. Thats the nature of mixing the arts. But, it can only get more technical as time goes on. Modern professional boxing has had quite a head start(100+ years). It wasnt as technical then as it is now. This too will happen with MMA.
Either way, it cant be denied that MMA is growing exponentially, and will soon equal and/or surpass boxing. MMA more entertaining? You decide...Gate receipts & PPV dont lie.
And that money will attract better competition, those who were making more money in boxing or other arts. So, we will see how well the purists in one art do against those with expertise in a mixture of the arts.:twocents:

it will be interesting to see if its around 10 years from now in its current form and popularity. Boxing is down, Golf is holding its own, tv poker is down, I think that when it becomes to main stream as it is heading (more so with shows like tap out and such and The reality show), like with anything, will begin to dwindle.
I have a few folks that i have known for years that do what i do and think MMA is awesome. To me when they get on the ground (dont get me wrong we do some of this as cross training in TKD) its like watching bowling or golf on tv to me.

there are several breeds of MMA most having v very simlar core rules, theres like UFC, PRIDE, and well, those are the two big ones if memory serves me right. UFC although not the first as these types of events were held many many years before (kumite anyone, fightclubs) UFC has placed it in the mainsteam media with partnering with large businesses, entering reality tv .and sporting their own clothing and training apprel (**) and of course jumping on the pay for view cash cow band wagon. They kind of paved the way more or less for any variation of the fullcontact style vs. style MMA fights

I got into UFC a few months back, and bought the last pay per view.
I love the mix of styles. It's fun to see a grappler fight a stand-up person, with each person trying hard to play the game their way.
I'm definately a big fan now.

I'll watch off and on, but I don't follow it with any regularity. I have a Shodan in Aikido, and used to be into Kendo and Iaido.

Eh, a few fighters are still around from back in the day. Albeit now with age and injuries from back in those wild days they cnat hang. But these new young thundercats wouldnt make it back then IMO.

greater style, technique, holds...the mixing of styles. I think they would easily hold their own. There were not hybrid fighters back in the day, and todays fighter is all about mixing striking, grappling to make the most of their respective fights.

Back in the day, there were fewer regulations and rules. The fight game has changed from what it once was. Some say for the better, some for the worse.
Point is, fighters from yester-year fought a different fight with different rules. There werent weight classes, kicking/kneeing a downed opponent was allowed, kidney kicks were allowed, etc.
I think the results would be surprising if we could fight the fighters of yester-year with todays fighters in the no-holds-barred style of fighting.

MMA is sport fighting, it's not bar fighting. Traditional martial arts like Tae Kwon Do will also be of limited use in a real world self defense scenario. It doesn't mean that MMA and Tae Kwon Do don't have their place, but it's not in a bar fight.

IMO boxing was/is being killed by promoters and the such. I just hope MMA as a whole does not go that route.

I dont think it will as boxing is really fueled by the promoters.....and i would think its run by them. I mean honestly how often do you even see the heads of the Federations that run any of the belts being won by any of the fighters?!
UFC esp is under one company not a bunch of shadey ibf, ucf,abc feds
