So I finally got a chance to play this past Sunday. This was my second experience with paintball in Florida and overall it was enjoyable (unbearably HOT, but enjoyable)
Anyway as usual there were the regulars and also as usual the ref's or ref I should say was in his teens and chances are he was working for paint or store credit. Now this is fine, I used to ref at a local field for much less then store credit, mainly I did it to better the field and attract more people. But I find that if these 'voluntary' refs, or even refs that are on payroll and are younger are intimidated very easily either by older, bigger players or by the fact that the guy cheating is a buddy of his or what not.
So one of the last games of the day they played a 7 on 7 (on an xball field mine you) and one of the teams was obviously the regulars that are always at the field the ones that think they own the place. Well before the game they were shooting their markers and a few of them were obviously ramping illegally ( I found out later that some were shooting up to 25 bps). Well the other team was a team of older guys and a couple younger and one of the older guys was yelling at the other team that if they shot him with a hot gun he'd put a foot in their °°° blah blah blah..so the ref sees all of this, a ref that was in the 16 - 17 age area and he says "I'm not even going to pull people, let them deal with it" the reason being was he wasn't running between lanes that fast to pull people. He did attempt to pull people on his side of the field and call others a distance from his sideline. So of couse the game ended in lots of drama and threats.
My main point is that the ref should have checked anyone he suspected to have an illegal gun and if proven to be he should have told them to fix it, get a different gun, or get off his field. I feel a large part of why he didn't is he didn't care enough too because he isn't actually paid and/or he was intimidated. This of course isn't the first time I've seen the sort of thing.
Anyone else encounter this? I feel I do all to often and it's just due to field owners being cheap. Which is understandable and I think it is fine to give players the opportunity to play a little cheaper. But ref's need to be held to a higher standard whether they are paid or volunteers
