View Full Version : How many guys here play pump?

The last time I played pump was back in the early-mid 90's at an indoor field in the SLC Utah area. The pumps were rentals, and they sucked. Semi-autos are really my thing, but over the last year Ive been trying to convince myself to acquire a pump.

First, how many of you guys regularly play pump?

Second, what aspects of pump play do you find more appealing than other forms of play?

I started playing pump back in 1988 and have owned a couple of different pump markers since then...

The Pump I have on order right now is a Lapco 2008 Grey Ghost...

The reason I play pump is it takes me back to when I first started playing and everybody was out to have fun and not just spray a whole lot paint... You had to make every shot count and find the right angle... Pretty much everybody was even across the board when it came to a marker but a players skill is what counted... You couldn't buy skill you had to work at it... Some games are slower paced while others are faster paced depending on with who you play with and where you play... I guess that pretty much sums it up for my reasons...

How do you like the grey ghost...

I've been thinking of getting a nice (stock class) pump marker...and it's between the Grey ghost and a phantom.

Any imput on it you can give?

I play pump all the time. To me the apeal is this. I can go out on the field with my Marq 7 and outshoot everyone there with no problems, but with my phantom I can one ball the kid that's rolling his ego trying to prove that he's the best paintballer ever. Bryce knows who I'm talking about. That makes it awesome.

The '08 Ghost is still on order (they said 2-6 weeks for delivery)... I have played with a original Grey Ghost and loved it but it belonged to a friend of mine... Very smooth pump action and a easy trigger...

I will write a review when I receive the '08 Ghost...

I just got back from a 5 year break in paintball. 5 years ago I was shooting an Emag. I started back up again and bought a nice mech mag, an xmag, and just a few weeks ago I bought a vsc phantom. The phantom sees more field time than the xmag does. It's just an absolute blast to play pump. I only play rec ball. So I'm sure that makes a huge difference.

It's really something that you have to try. And you've got to try it a few times. It can be really frustrating at first. It's a lot different just operating a pump gun. You've got to play with it a few games to get the feel for it.

Once you get used to using the new gun, then you'll start to realize how awesome it is. It really changes how you play. You'll walk out of a lot of games thinking 'If I had my xmag I would have smoked all those guys'. But you'll walk out of a few hearing 'That dude with the pump just took out our whole team'. That always feels good.

It took a little while for it to happen, but I'm hooked. I really like playing without pods, and how little the pump gun weighs. I can run around all over the place without getting tired. No more carrying pods, or tanks and hoppers around. And it's saves a ton of money on paint.

I do that with my mech mag. It is a great feeling. Is it more gratifying to do it with a pump than a mech mag you think?

I never really thought of it like that. I dont carry many pods(normally 2), but I didnt even consider the no pods, no tank, no hoppers.

How much paint do you usually carry when playing pump?

I prefere pump over semi, plus I play better with my Sniper or Phantom. It forces me to be more aggressive and make moves I wouldn't with a semi. Plus with my Sniper and good paint I am an awsome good shot and I find it fun to be able to hit even the smallest little edge someone didn't realise they were sticking out.

I can't say I really get more satisfaction out of eliminations in pump then with my Marq but I definatly have more fun playing.

I have 13 rounds in the gun, and I take 3 or 4 ten round tubes with me, along with a spare 12g C02 cartridge. I usually only go through 1 or two of the tubes.

Brewtt and I had a pump only event to go to about a month ago. So we were strictly shooting pump mags for a month or three. Upon our return to semi's both of us felt like noobs. Our game is so much better with a pump in hand. Not that we dont kick °°° with our semis, but you get te point.

When I say semi, I am referring to mechanical. Is this the same for you, or are you referring to electro?

Either or, I don't really care one way or another electro or mech both are about the same to me as I usually slide my hand down and use one finger to trigger any way so the ROF isn't that different. When I use a high ROF I get sloppy. I vastly prefer pump over either.

How much paint do you usually carry when playing pump?

With my Phantom I usually carry about 8 ten round tubes in my flippedout2 harness plus about 12 in the marker, but I seldom use more than 30 balls in a game. With my Sniper I just use my normal hopper so about 160ish, with no pack or pods. Once again I usually only use about 15-30 in a game.

Like stated above. One shot in the goggs! Waiting! Waiting! One shot. Kid looks and can't believe he just got hit. Look on kid's face-PRICELESS! I started with a phantom. It is a nice place to start. Then got a CCM S5. I still kind of miss that one. There is a pump player in Poland using that one. Then got myself an S6. It does not get any better. You cannot help yourself but to have fun.

Playing pumps in the late 80's was my intro to paintball. There's not much of a pump scene in the UK now, but it is growing in popularity again. I've a WGP pro stock pump project on the cards for future use ;)

That's the thing about playing pump. You don't get as much eliminations as with a semi, but the one's you do get are most rewarding. I don't play much pump, but i do own a phantom and playing with it is usually a blast. I carry about 10 tubes with me, and 15 balls in the gun and run it off a 3,5oz COČ tank. Usually i only use 2-5 tubes per game, but i've played games where i had to use it all.

Duking it out against a semi is fun! Either it's a snapshooting contest, or scaring the crap out of them because they never thought you were there.

Shawn, if you are planning to give pump a try, i can reccomend the phantom. It's relatively cheap to get, and the stock barrel is very accurate. Get a VSC version, and a 3,5oz COČ tank. That should give you enough for about 400 shots. Also a red dot on there is kinda nice. The weight however is too light for some people, they just don't like it. It takes time getting used to, but personally it doesn't bother me much.

I was completely useless when I first got my phantom. Then I got a stock for it. That made all the difference. I couldn't aim without one.

Yeah... I think I'm going pump mag tomorrow. It's been a few weeks playing semi and it's getting old.

I really like my Rainman VII Mag pump kit. I think I'll get another soon. :p

By the way... to each his own.

I love Rainman pump mags (CCM pump kit).

I dislike Phantoms.
Like Sniper-style pumps.
Like my Pyre.

This being said... if I'm playing pump... it's with a Rainman pump mag. ;)

Hey:

I LOVE to play pump...it isn't a way to play its a way of life...cheap. (I also have some semi-auto mechanicals too, don't get me wrong paintball is fun).

I have tons of different pumps that I play with:
Phantom
CCM
Sniper
Palmer's
Action Markers
Sheridans...the good ones (i.e. old)
Lapco Grey Ghost (old, but awaiting on a new one...)

Pure pump play typically allows more strategy, moving, and angles instead of fire power. I enjoy playing with others who play pump and I believe we all have fun. The aspect of pure pump play is fun, because you don't get shot more than once, typically.

Modified play is when you and maybe some others play pump, but semi-autos, and electros are used, as well (open class). I have more fun playing pump in this scenario, because I work the angles more. I always try and work the angles even with one of my mechanicals but it forces me to take the angle and move my tail. If I don't move, I typically end up getting hunkered down for lack of fire power to get out and work a lane (if I'm not using an autotrigger and hopper).

My :twocents: for what it's worth....

I am definately a pump guy. When I start my day it is usually with my mag, and then around the third or fourth game in I swap up to my Phantom. I really like the freedom of the pump. I can sprint if I have to, I can take my time and make sure I get one good shot off (only to hear "HIT!!"). That is why I play pump. Plus it is cheap for a day of playing like ClassicMagger mentioned.

how'd i miss this one???

I've been playing exclusively pump for 3ish years now ... aside from the occasional borrowing of my dads mag last game of the day and shoot up the rest of the paint.

ill be frank... i did it to cut down on paint consumption. I like to shoot a lot of paint with a semi. Budget wise i had to make a change to be able to afford to play. So that's what i did.

I can say though that i get more of a rush being handicapped. Having limited paint/air gives me a feeling of urgency and alertness that i just don't have when im toting a semi.
^that being said there is something about feeling "safe" behind a semi with 800 rnds on my back ...

pump = im in the zone all aware zen like even when playing but at the same time jacked up on 4 double espresso's pumped up

semi = come and get me if you can mua ha ha ...

guess that kind of sums it up... having to plan things out a little more when playing pump. Therefore having to be that much more aware and cognisent of the things i'm dong.

I own 2 pumpmags, 1 Redux, I cocker, and a 1 pgp, but still haven't played yet. I plan on using them in 2 weeks with a Sydarm as a back up in case Mook or Zak try to rush me..:evillaugh:

You must not have seen me play... The only thing I rush to is a nice big standup so that I can empty my 10 pods in relative comfort.

But on the subject of pump play, there was this time when I held one of Mook's pumps for like 5 minutes... let me tell you that was a rough 5 minutes.

I own 4 pump markers, all but one are wall hangers from my youth.

I started out with a pump, but quickly turned to the 68 Special when it came out. Last year I took out the "phantom" trying to save a couple bucks, and to see if "I still had it"...

I found out two things.
When I comes to money for paintball, you either have it, or you dont.
and the same goes for lost youth.

Because no amount of money spent justifies getting your hat handed to you all day.

I play pump all the time. Technically I started out playing pump, with a :lol2: Talon, and I didn't do so bad, but keep that to yourself.

I got back into pump play, though, as a challenge. I was out at Paintball Arkansas and Britt (owner of Underground Mod Shop) came out and let me borrow his Sniper II which he had just put together, and I was hooked again. So I built my Trilogy Pump (on sale now, pending...) and it was all over.

I ended up picking up my green Sniper II off of MCB and that's what I've had since.

I've got plans to turn my CCM body into a mini/midgeted pump here before too long.

I play pump alot more than semi for some reason... it just takes more skill i suppose. now i should switch back after a half a day while im still in pump mode and see what happens. I also love the looks i get when i stroll onto the field with a micro phantom and a leg harness full of cigar tubes.

ive even converted a few people to pump play. (you know who you are ;P)

I do wonder if the proportion that have migrated to pump is equivalent for those on the internet to those who are not.

thats what kinda stinks, you get all these new players that see the more skillful players that use pump, try it once and hate it... then they flood the market with new pump guns that they dont want. so it fluctuates rather rapidly

It is optional. Comes with a good barrel kit and the self restraint to only shoot at your opponent. Bunkers lanes trees rocks . . . these are all just distractions.

What pump players all keep secret is the ridiculous amount of effort they put into learning to shoot on target. You can do it with other guns as well but the skill comes from discipline and practice instead of being forced on you by adrenaline and lack of ammunition which then makes everything practice till you get good.

Personally I get my rush by taking the hopper off my mech mag and one ballin it.
