View Full Version : Lang to Retire

So this is not something I would normally post on PBL seeing that it seems that most of the posters here are not into the tournament side of paintball so much. But I have some speculation that some may agree with...or may cause some discussion..and after all that is what we are here to do, right?
Alright guys, it's come that time. A time no one enjoys, and everyone has to do.
My paintball career has been a successful one, highlighted with my tenures at IRONMEN and Dynasty, and it's sad to say farewell. I have accomplished everything a paintball player has dreamed about, and more. I can accredit that to the excellent staff, players, and sponsors I have surrounded myself with over the years- and of course the fans. I would like to give a large amount of gratitude to the loyal fans that have stuck with me this whole time- it's been great. It's time that I put down the marker and pursue my life goals and career. As of right now, I can't tell you what direction I am heading, because not even I do. Life gives you many choices and roads to take, and I am about to make my choice of which way to go. It's sad to bring my career to a close, I will miss it. I worked my way to the top, and now I am stepping down. World Cup will be my last event, and my retirement will go in to effect once the event is over. Good luck to all those in the paintball world.
Oliver Lang
He was on a 3 year contract and it seems that it started in 2006..so I guess it is about up.(I can't believe how fast time flies.) I am going to assume that if a renewal of the contract was offered at all, then it was offered with a rather large cut in pay due to the current state of the industry.
Why else would someone who (seems) to have such passion for something give it up, when they were making a decent living off of it?
I wonder what Nicky Cuba will do. It seems Cuba's contract was signed at a significantly later date then Lang's though, so he may have some time left.

It might just be time. I'm sure he wants to have an "adult" life complete with a career. He might want to get a job in a stable industry, or really want to do something (career goal/dream). I doubt he stops playing, just no more professional competition.

Definitly post this stuff up. The tourney scene is just as much a part of the industry as any other, and even if someone doesnt follow the players/teams it can still give insight into the industry.
But I have some speculation that some may agree with...or may cause some discussion..and after all that is what we are here to do, right?
Exactly!:glare: And I have to say, I was unaware of this...and am intrigued:coffee:...now onto the speculation:wthumpup:

I would assume that as well. For 2 reasons, 1) His move did not result in any 1st place or Championship placings, which has ultimately resulted in 2)No increase in sales for the sponsor
Why else would someone who (seems) to have such passion for something give it up, when they were making a decent living off of it?
Because they wont any longer make a decent living at it, and to save face. Think about it...you are given $100,000 to do a job that you were unsuccessful at, and then you have to take a substantial cut to stay sponsored? Kinda ruins his marketability if he plans to stay in paintball in some other facet(announcing, promotion of goods, etc).
I wonder what Nicky Cuba will do. It seems Cuba's contract was signed at a significantly later date then Lang's though, so he may have some time left.
Honestly, all this shows me is that the industry isnt growing. The companies that are supposed to be on top like Dye and SP arent throwing money around like they used to. They 'won' the battle by putting the little guys out of business, and in doing so they lost the 'war' of making themselves more money by doing so. In the end, business is about making money...so for the present time they have failed. Maybe things will turn around, but with the state of the economy I dont believe that will be anytime soon.
Thanks for the post. I enjoyed it:D:hail:

I thought the Ironmen won the Cup last year?

If you are referring to PSP, I dont know. Was it just that one event, or the whole series?
Ans as I recall, they did not win the NPPL series.

They did win cup last year along with the NXL series title. NPPL I'm not sure how they did. I am trying to pull up last years scores, but unfortuantly I'm at school and there are like 800 other people using the same internet connection.
I want to say they finished the NPPL in the top 4, but I could be wrong.

I believe last year Dynasty was first beating Impact by the smallest of margins, then Ironmen were third. I can't find for sure, but I know that Dynasty and Impact were in that order and seperated by less than 10 points when it was all said and done.

I know Dynasty took first for sure..but I'm not sure on the rest.
Ok after working a good deal of GoogleFU I finally found the scores for the end of last year.
B-pow was correct on the top 3.
1. Dynasty 106
2. Impact 105
3. Ironmen 94
4. Infamous 79
5. Joy 78
So Ironmen took third overall in NPPL and won the NXL. Not too shabby, plus I am pretty sure they had a few podium finishes in both leagues throughout the year.

Hey:
Well, I agree with most of you. I think his contract is up and he isn't going to be making squat if another contract was offered to him. Not to mention, in my opinion, (which everyone has one and it we all know what else everyone has), I don't think his name is selling anything anymore, if it ever did. I know having a gun owned by or with some other idiot's name written on it never made me want it-typically it made me NOT.
Maybe I'm crazy because of it, but the pro's don't get me all wet. Perhaps, I don't see it enough on TV or don't care enough to show up to events. Are they talented-most likely, are they worth making a fuss over...I don't think so.
Nonetheless, good topic, I am surprised to hear it and happy that something is going on within the industry...

Hard to believe that a hacker would waste their time to hack a guys account just to say he is retiring. How many hackers even know who Ollie Lang is? They really should come up with a better story than that.
If it isnt true, lets wait to hear it either directly from 1) Dye or 2)Ollie Lang himself. If the phishing story was true, they should/will be posting about it.

Both. I LOL'd like "haha" and then I serious'd and thought about what a ridiculous use of time that is.

Na I found the whole situation funny...just how we were discussing it so seriously and then it turned out to be fake.

I don't know, the post really really sounds like the way Lang talks. If it was fake they did thier homework. I'd almost be more prone to believe that it was legit then something came up and changed his mind.
