You can be new to the sport, but rock at it.
You can be a vet at the game and still suck.

What makes a noob?

To me noob is a brand new player. First (few) times playing. Still have to be reminded about barrel covers, mask on. Lots of times you have to chrono their marker for them...they go to the HPA fill area w/ a co2 tank, Common blind shooters, people that will call out when a ball hits their bunker, fake gun problems to be out, etc.
Some people stay noob longer than others.

For one, i would say: A glorious lack of basic knowledge and common sense.

pretty much what punkncat said, except after a certain amount of time if the person does not improve at least in their ability to follow general rules then they get DEMOTED from noob to STUPID.

Kid that had his parents buy him all his gear cause "He wanted it"

Kid that can't keep his finger away from the trigger of his electro and shoots him self in the foot walk'n on the field

Kid that has no respect for the field or his gear. This one usually goes hand in hand with the first one

Kid that talks smack and won't "try" to hold it up on the field. I got no problem if you wanna talk smack and get your butt whooped. Just means your not smart. However if you talk it but don't walk it...well Noob.

There's many more...

Kid? thats your definition?

I highly dought it has anything to do with age. I have seen some grown men acting more immature then ten year olds on the feild, of coarse there was alcohol since it was a stag (I don't think the owner will accept stags anymore). As the day went on, the higher the danger rate went up. Needless to say, i kept my mask on my face all day. One man even shot another unprotected player in the legs multiple times to make him "dance" like in the westerns. One was even sick, passed out, woke up and drove away in his truck.

Lack of respect and knowledge for basic safety rules. I classify that as noob. Gun skills vary for anybody. But knowing that you're not supposed to take of your mask in the middle of the game and not listening to the ref when he's talking is a big time noob classification to me.

All good definitions. Someone who doesn't read the FAQ stickies or owner's manual first is headed for noob status too.

Add to that a huge attitude used as a form of overcompensation...

I've got kids so it seems I say that alot...It can be both adults and kids. However it's a true noob that's an adult and still having Mom and Dad buy there paintball gear.

I think there is a fundamental difference between a newby and a n00b. A newby is just a new player. It's not derogatory in any way, it's just used to say he's new. n00b, on the other hand, is used to describe a newby who thinks he isn't.

Its the guy in the crisp Dye 08 pants, Fresh Empire Jersey, JT cleats right out of the box, Sandanda signed by Ollie Lang, headbands, stickers on the hopper, a brand new *** with a blackheart board.. who holds up the start of a game cause he can't figure out how to turn on his gun.

Its the guy who calls paintballs 'bullets'.

Its the player who, on the break, runs to the closest bunker and never moves, yet brags about his mAd Skillz.

It is the guy that points to your pump gun and says 'you must suck if you play with that'.

Its the guy in the staging area who says his maker shoots 40bps at 500fps and can hit a coke can 10 of 10 times at 300 yards cause he has a 21" thunderpig barrel and a scope.

Can you spot the noob?

Ive been playing for about 2 years. I consider myself a noob. I know I have a lot to learn and a lot to get better at...so to myself I am a noob. If others see me this way I don't know....and really don't care. I use it for myself in a silly self deprecating way.

So true.

One time, instead of saying 'newbie' I said a player was still 'green' and 'wet behind the ears'. The young kids playing with me looked at me as if I spoke Russian.

We have two different versions of newb/noob.

Newb = Newbie... This person is a new player, misses things like googles on, barrel bag, etc... See other better definitionss above ^^^

Noob = someone that should know better, but doesn't give a ****!

Usages:

Newb... Hey Rob, cut the guy a break, he's still a newb. (Non insulting, just information about the skill level of the player)

Noob... Hey Rob, that guy is such a noob. He still can't figure out which end the paint comes out. (Very insulting, comment on the lack of intelligence)

Ty

PS Noob can also be defined as some one like me that misses BlueDragonX's post and basically repeats what he said... DOH!

Quite simply, the inability to succeed at the game. Bad descisions at the wrong time are the norm. Overlooking the obvious, are at the top.
