View Full Version : Mag owners...would you start over?

Lets say Tom came out with a new mag that was more efficient than the current mag, but none of the parts were reverse compatible.
So you would have to buy a whole new marker and start over...would you?

For sure.
I would keep my old ones.. well some of them :)
But I would buy a new one for sure :)
yeah. I thought I did when I started with AKA.
Definitely! Automaggot to the bone :)

My mags are sharing playing time with a whole new marker already, AKA. So, you betcha I would start over with a whole new mag.

Sorry to go against the grain.
But simply NO.
Tom built what he perceived to be "the best" marker for durability, maintenance, and reliability.
It was only till he saw the "trend" of "disposable" markers that he changed.
He was chasing sales, and went from leading the market to following.
anything less than a stainless steel mag will be a compromise.
What other marker can you leave in a closet for five to ten years, add oil, and go play?
what other marker can reliably run after one hundred thousand rounds with no major maintenance?
I have a classic mag from 1994 that still runs as good as the day it was purchased... only thing that has ever required changing was on/off orings and a bumper.

With that being said John, why would you own a Phantom, or any other marker for that matter?
Edit: And if that were the case, why would you own any mag but a fully stainless steel one?(ie XMAg, RogueMag, or any ULE bodied mag:nana:)

My VM-68 would do that. And it wasnt stainless.

Ya know if Tom was actually behind the product theres a reason to it. I wouldn;t get rid of any of my old mags, but I would sure as hell rock a new one.

It would take more than efficiency to win me over. I would need it to look better and have other functional improvements. The trigger pull would have to be equivalent to or better than a ULT on an Xvalve. It would have to weigh what a ULE xvalved Ultra light inteliframed mag weighs now. A purely mechanical marker geared towards tournament play with the lower 10 bps ROF and all the lovely antichop tech etc. would be awesome.
A more efficient mag would still be a mag so as far as that goes I am sure I would eventually get one. But would I buy one when they first came out? Most definately. Especially if Tom put all the above into it. Were it as well engineered and produced as the current stuff who in their right mind wouldn't?

I would like to say yes but I could only imagine the cost... I'm not sure if my mag has single "new" part on it.
And even though the entire question is hypothetical, I think anything that AGD made would still be compatible w/ existing parts :)

What he said /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\ /\
I know that if AGD were to come up with another maker. It would only happen if it was better than the current Automag offerings which would make them incredible!

I dont imagine the Phantom will last as long or require the same level of maintenance as the classic mag.. time will tell.

Again, the wear-life of my classic mag has proven itself. the fact that I have purchased the listed markers is more of a "want" not a "need".
Lessons have been learned over the last year or so, and to purchase a "new" AGD marker at this point would be similar to buying a eight thousand dollar "snap-on" tool box.
My VM-68 would do that. And it wasnt stainless.
If you still used the PMI-3, or kept it as a loaner/backup this comment might hold water.

While that may be speculation for you, the Phantom has proven itself for many many others.

Does that comparison imply AGD markers are over-priced and you are paying more for name than quality of product? If so, I see your point and can agree in some respects. They would be even more expensive in Stainless form.

My VM-68 was purchased and used, sat in the closet for 10 years, was pulled out and used again. The comparison holds water.

Comparing a phantom that might see two hundred shots in a day of play to a mechanical automag that typically sees over five hundred in a day of play, is comparing apples to oranges.

I used a 68 classic for many years before switching to the timmy. Reliability issues caused me to return to AGD.
The "upgrades" I have done to the automags have not appeared to increase the durability or reliability, If anything lvl 10 in particular is quite the opposite.
The jump throughout AGD's product line was certainly a case of "I want", and quality being a cornerstone of AGD's success, I am confident that they will last longer than most, just not as long as my classic.

Specific markers aside, if a marker has been shot 100,000 rounds by your original statement its comparing apples to applies regardless of how many shots per day.
Moving on now...anyone else?:coffee:

I can't say definatly no, but it would have to be alot more then just more efficient. But still probably not.

Id like to think there is always a point to questions like this. I know Tom used to ask these sorts of things on AO to gauge interest. Sometimes desire/demand can seem high when it really isnt.

Yeah that is for sure.. usually when 100 people say they would buy something of made.. maybe only 10-20 really do.
P.S. just throwing 10-20% here.. I am not sure of the % but it's not really high :)

I have been pondering this question recently, like what if TK was to go back to the drawing board and redesign the mag, w/o worrying about backwards compatability.
Id rock anything he's made from the ground up. Cause I know it would be head and shoulders better than anything else.
I just hope that 100% of this thread is not a pipe dream :footinmouth:

I just remember everyone on AO always making suggestions, and/or complaining about all sorts of things concerning mags. Sometimes I wonder if it had happened, would there have been a resurgence of the mag.

Sure as heck would if not to only to be the first to pump it!

My biggest complaint about Mags are their air consumption. They are GAS PIGS!

your damn right i would.
I often wondered what he would design, and if it would be COMPLETELY different. Either way, assuming the quality exists, and the ease of use is still there, i'd surely give it a look. Though i cant imagine it would wind up being something i didnt like.
As a fun exercise i wonder what it would be.....
