you want a heavy cutting point broadhead 4 blade is better than 3
Wild hogs have a very heavy shoulder plate try to get your shots in back of the plate , quartering away is one of the better shots , hogs are tough & some times stupid , unlike a deer they will give you a 2nd shot a lot of times
good luck & have fun

Hey, thanks alot. Are expandable or fixed broadheads better in your opinion?

with a hog go with fixed , I think a cutting point is better than a chisel also

Old Hoyt (ridiculously quiet), 56# Draw (getting it increased though, last time I changed the draw weight I was 15), 2-cam
12 Carbon Impact Arrows
Thunderheads (for now, but looking into some other kinds)

Kinda depends on your shooting style also.
If shooting fingers then shoot a cut on impact broad as mentioned above something like a Zwickey or a Phantom.
If shooting a release with a drop away rest etc. then I would shoot a Muzzy!
There are a lot of things to consider but with the little info. that you have given this would be the best advice I could give.
Good luck and I hope you can climb a tree real quick! :smarty:

have a backup for the bow. If they let you, carry a pistol of large caliber. At the very least have a good escape route to a tree planned out. These damn things can move fast despite their porcine appearance.
Hogs are stupid, but they can be VERY aggressive when wounded and they can do some serious damage to you if you aren't careful.
Also, the best way to eat wild hog is a whole hog pig roast.. slowwwly over 24 hours... hmmmmmmmm ..
Invite friends who bring beer... Priceless!

Medic: I am still not old enough to legally own or possess a handgun, nor can I legally drink... and it sucks :( I am looking at buying a big effing knife though:axemurder:
Triangle: First we shall see if I take a hog without getting all gored up:p I'm sure it will be fun though. I bet they are delicious, never tried it though.
Does anyone know:
When the "rut" is?
What type of scents they respond to?
If they respond well to calls?

I would assume that since you are underage that you are going with an adult. MAKE SURE that you heed medic's advice and have a large caliber handgun or short rifle available, ie with the adult or whatever.
I am not really understanding, here as long as an adult is around "kids" can hunt w/ a rifle.
I know from first hand experiance that hogs can be mean as hell. I almost got gored by a boar while hunting with my cousin. He chased it out of the brush towards me. I was supposed to shoot it, but it came on me too fast. I took off running and the damn thing chased me. I had to go to tree to get away, and it tried to stick me as it went by with its tusks. My cousin laughed so hard he fell on the ground. I have never lived it down.

we had one chase us in Arkansas at TKD camp while we were in and around the river swimming. Luckily one of the folks not swimming had a 45 (i think it was) caliber hand gun and shot it. We ate good the next day.

Sorry for the misconception. Read that as underage to have a handgun. I am not yet 21 years of age, I am an "adult" though (20). If I do anything, I might bring a coach-gun (short break action), but probably not. I might partner up with my slightly onler cousin who should have a .357 or .44.
That had to be scary getting chased...

Actually I might try my hand with a spear. I will work my way towards a knife. I will definitely keep that in mind though.

yea another rush is .45 hand gun army crawling
up close then using only a .45 I don't shot much rifle anymore
more bow handgun or knife rifle only for deer

IDK if I would like rifle hunting for most animals (not legal in IL, so I never done it). I am a big fan of my bow though. Shotgun is fun too, but I like bowhunting way more.

growing up in Texas and shooting my first deer when I was 6
I do not find joy in rifle hunting unless it is a long shot or big such as bear game

just remember wild hogs are not cute and will gore and eat you so remember that if you go, i know skilled hunters that take .45 with them when bow hunting them just fyi

This is a non-issue. It is illegal for me to have a handgun due to age restrictions. No can do, end of story.

During deer season in Wisconsin we are encouraged to shoot as many wild pigs as we see. They have been deemed a harm to the environment so cap them all if you want.. lol..
I don't think I have ever seen one in Wisconsin.. saw a lot in Texas and Alabama..

So now that you have 11 hogs, what do ya do with them now? Just cook em up and eat them?
These things have tusks? You could make a necklace out of those

9 were sows, so only 2 had tusks. Neither had any of substantial size. I skinned, quartered and butchered my hog personally. I am cooking some for girlfriend and I this weekend. Food tastes so much better when you personally take it from killing to consuming... {mouth begins to water}

I would love it...lol sorta... If it was a wild hog yeah, but that was a tame hog released on a hunting reserve. Not fair chase, not really that much fun. If it was a true wild boar, I would LOVE it!!

Damn Medic... that's about the same size as a Jersey cow! I think it's high power rifle time, or maybe an RPG!

Hehe I thought this was going to be a thread about what some friends of mine referred to as "Whaling"
Go to the local events and see who can bag the biggest chick.... yeah I have some sick friends....
As far as the wild bores - ever see the old hunting spears natives used to use that had a cross bar about 2 ft down the shaft - that was so when they were charged by a wild bore it would not run the entire spear through their bodies and still gore you at the other end...
