Ok so I was at work today working. (go figure) I finished the few things a had on my work list so i asked for some other projects. I was given the task of trim routing some poly carbonate faces. this is something i had done before so no real big deal. Boy was I wrong today!!! Got all set up and started cutting the first of many faces. The chips being shot out of the router blade were pelting me in the hand. It was also very cold so it hurt even more than normal. So I stopped for a min to go get a small glove on to protect my hand. That's I big NO NO to have loose clothing around moving machinery.... I was cutting for a short time and moved my hand to close to the router bit. (more blade like though) And guess what happened next? The blade snatched the edge of my glove and pulled my fingers into it. :wall::wall::wall::wall: So now I chewed up the tips of my ring and middle finger on my right hand. The cuts weren't to bad but that fact that I new better is the part that ****es me off the most. Now I'm sitting here having a hell of a time typing and I pretty much cant do anything (working on my guns) cause my hand has about 50 lbs of gauze wrapped around it. It was only the tips of my fingers that got hit but I have to keep em kinda straight. I ended up with i think 3 stitches on my middle finger and just some coverings for my ring finger. :wall::wall::wall::wall:

I will try to get some pics when I have to remove my bandages tomorrow...

I HAVE SOME PICS BELOW...

Well, as a machinist i know the dangers of working with cutting tools, and you were lucky. It could have been alot worse. I usually work with enclosed machines, but have worked with ones that had the door locks disabled. Also with some near accidents. Because of this i have a non-tolerance policy concerning slacking on safety. Keep doors closed, use shop glasses when needed, ear protection, and keep loose ends out of the way when working with open machines. This i learned the hard way, some near misses and when my worn down overall cuff got gripped by a drilling chip on a drill press and wrapped my arm around the spindle. I consider myself lucky because the thing had slipping pulleys instead of gears, otherwise i would have broken something or worse.

Every open machine should be threated with the greatest respect, because tools can break, chips can grab around the spindle and grab you, and usually when you realise something is wrong, you're too late.

I've once heard of a story about a operator that was behind a CNC high speed milling centre. The tool got chucked wrong, and the machine revved up to 20.000 rpm and the tool dropped out of the spindle, went trough the safety glass hitting the operator that flew 30 feet trough the workshop by the impact and got killed.

Oh well, take care of your injuries and be more safe in the future.

I have my scars to prove that rules are there for a reason...

I had my hand pulled into a large Bridgeport when I was 17. I got off really lucky... I do know exactly what the bones and tendons in my right index finger look like... Damn! I wish I had thought to photograph it. The scar is still with me.

First thing I was taught in our machine shop by a very senior machinist:

1. No gloves
2. No ties
3. No lanyards
4. Try to avoid long sleeves
5. Safety glasses

Glad you're ok.

yep, a lucky person for sure.
Thanks for the polishing tip, its coming along slow but nicely on the rough rough XT ripper body i have. I would estimate another 10-15 hours of sanding.

I flew out one of our FN personnel the other day after a fight with a powered miter saw aka chop saw. Partially severed his left thumb. He was lucky as there just happened to be a vascular surgeon available at Balad's Air Force Theater Hospital who was able to patch him up and re-attach it.

No I don't have pics.. I was too busy at the time to take any. I wish I did though.

Glad to hear that you are ok though.

That's the first thing I learned in the shop too.
Those rules are on a huge poster on the wall of the shop.

Funny... I have those rules posted above the lathe in the basement...

We added:

Rules Regarding Injuries:

1. If the person is on fire, put them out, then laugh at them.
2. If the person is bleeding arterially, staunch the bleeding, then laugh at them.
3. If the person is not injured in the above manner, feel free to point and laugh... They were obviously doing something stupid!
4. Tourniquets are NOT to be placed around the neck for nose bleeds!

In high school I ran my hand into a printing press. Almost to the wrist. Jammed the machine which probably saved me. I was just barely able to reach over and turn it off. I then had to manually roll it backwards to get my hand out. Nearly passed out once I got my hand free. Was black and blue for several weeks.

Sorry to hear about this.
