There seems to be a bagel store every 100 yards on Staten Island. They come and go at an alarming frequency, usually the better ones are the ones that have been around the longest.

The one with the most delicious, mouth watering bagels is called "Bageland", and is not too far out of my way on the ride in. On Friday's at work we leave about 45 mins earlier, so I stop in to the bagel store and treat myself to an everything bagel with cream cheese, which I eat for lunch on our shortened lunch break.

Now the problem I have with Bageland, is that it looks like its run by Al Quada. You go in there, Mohamed, Mohamed and Mohamed greet you with that "Death to Americans" look, while the 'derka-derka' tunes are playing over the loud speaker. They also have the obligatory "9-11 NEVER FORGET" poster up, but Im not really sure about that one. Sometimes I wonder if an "Everything" bagel also includes anthrax and a 1/2 lb of c4 explosives. Hell, I even have my entire family calling the place "Al Quada Bagels".

I don't know what those people are doing there, but god damn them make good bagels. OMG are they good. Usually the line is out the door when I get there at 6am, so they are doing something right - and the infidels seem not to mind who's behind the counter.

Of course I am out of my mind right now for lack of sleep.. but at least I have genuine Al Quada bagel for lunch :coffee:

Yeah, could mean "9-11: never forget.....how we pulled one over on those stupid US infidels."

Meh, according to most politicians we're funding terrorism by doing anything from filling our gas tanks to shopping in those 'world market' stores.

Ironically, fundamentalist Islamic Arabs see bakers as an abomination. I don't remember precisely why, but I know that there is some kind of claim that the making of certain types of breads is 'against Islam'. In Baghdad baker's shops and barbers were the first to be targeted for some reason. It is the resurgence of bakeries that is also one of the telling points of re-emerging stability that is being touted by the suits over here. Who knows.. Though I still doubt that making a Jewish bread such as a Bagel will EVER make it in the middle east.

So hopefully that makes your particular sand travelers less likely to be Al Queda operatives.

Enjoy your bagel!

Ya all bring a smile to my face... Al Queda Bagels... worth blowing yourself up over... :)

Medic... That's interesting... I wonder if the bakers issue has to do with leavened versus unleavened bread?

I hear ya. There's a very convenient little market in town that is owned and operated by Middle Easterners. I have no doubt that immigrants from that part of the world can be excellent solid American citizens, but when I hear them talking in their native language on their cell phones from behind the counter I can't help but wonder, if just for a moment, what they are plotting now?

Man I loled so hard when I read this earlier.
Now I have been just jonzin for a good bagel. A simple egg bagel with loads of cream cheese would be SOOOO good right about now.
Hook me up Big E....

We have a place here in town called Einstien Bagels thats pretty good, in a cookie cutter starbucksy kinda way. I know there have to be better ones out there. But hey when Lenders out of the fridge, a toaster and some philly do, I am easy to satify in that area.

This really is funny. It'll be funnier when i tell you all this next bit.

I was born in Iraq and lived there until i was 2 years old. my parents lived there pretty much all their lives and my grandparents still do. I guess you could call me an Iraqi but there are so many different races there its as big a generalization as Asian. My dad is full blooded Assyrian, and my mother is half Assyrian and half Armenian(her mother being Armenian) We are and have been Christians since the dawn of time, Assyrians and Armenians i mean(there are a few catholics as well)

chances are i can have a steady conversation with the people at al quaeda bagels in their native language. LOL!
