View Full Version : Paintball gear bags

I'm starting to think that I would need a paintball gear bag. I have always just brought everything in different bags and all. But after watching Zak's video and him carrying a gear bag, I think I might want one.

Any suggestions on good ones? Or things to really go for or stay away from? Or any comments at all :)

Thanks

Both my brother and I came to that conclusion last year. A gear bag is very nice and I am glad I invested in one. However, just like you I did not want to spent $100+ on the bag. The ones i was looking at were in the $150 range. Not thrilled about that.

Ended up that each of us found used ones from local paintball fields for cheap cheap cheap. I picked up an Empire bag that I think is discontinued and he got an NXE bag. The one common trait is that they have big rolling wheels and handles to roll them around. Without that I think they would be not very nice bags.

Reading why I just typed I guess all I told you was "look for a used bag because they want too much for new ones"

With big all-terrain wheels.

Zak: Thanks and yes you are right, these bags are expensif. The one with wheels are like 150 and up... wow. I'll look at my local paintball fields to see if I can find one. Or maybe find a special somewhere.

Bones: yeah I imagine it woudl help to have big wheels with some of the fields I go to :) haha

Maybe I can find some for sale of these forums.. but I imagine shipping would be allot, especially to Canada.

Thanks guys

Ill have to look into it when I get home, but dont limit yourself to paintball specific bags. I have a very nice bag from Sparco; which I use for racing, that would be quite suitable for paintball.

It is very similar to what Zak describes, wheels, large main compartment, I've also got a compartment for a helmet (mask) as well as another one for shoes and a zippered area inside for dirty clothes. Plenty of storage for whatever equipment I need to bring. I'm sure I could fit four or five markers with all tanks and hoppers pretty easily into it.

Could point on that. I know allot of hockey bags that are made the same way. Only difference is, hockey bags are one big compartment. Paintball bags have different compartments and places for barrels and all that fun stuff :)

But thanks I will look into that.

This is the beast I have http://www.actionvillage.com/040-270-0003

I had the mega BodyBag for couple of years. It doesn't have a telescoping handle like the Ratco bag.

I carry the following in it:

(2) 68/4500 tanks
(2) markers (PM7 and ULE mag)
(2) barrels (DW CF and Proto UL)
(2) loaders (Rotor and Halo)
Tool bag
Huge parts box
Radio
Paintball Caddy
(2) masks (Vents and Profilers)
(6) Dye locklids
Spec Ops vest (custom but Broadsword style)
NXe pod pack
Misc towels, lanyards, swabs, etc

The Ratco bag has all the features of the $150+ bags.

I actually like the way the bodybag is divided... but yeah a telescoping handle might help.. but it's not to bad :)

thanks for the info.

the bag i use is from REDZ, im not sure its still made... might be.. i dunno youll have to check.. i bought it back in 04-05ish, its been lots of places, its pretty beat up, one of the stiffeners for the main cavity has cracked, so it doesnt like to roll straight anymore, and the weels are °°°°ty hard plastic

as for what it holds... you dont wanna know what comes to the field with me in this thing

2 68/4500 tanks
3-4 guns
4 hoppers (rotor, prophecy, halo, revolution)
2 masks (invision, and an i3pro)
3 spare lenses
3 full barrel kits
lots of towels and rags
swabs
gloves
allen wrenches
oil
grease
o-rings
and a 12gram :ninja:

I currently use a Mega Bodybag. It's actually my first and only pb bag so I don't have much to compare it against.

I like it a lot but it does have a few drawbacks...

There's a lot of dividers but they do tend to either shift around or collapse on themselves. I've used binder clips to kind of help keep everything attached to each other but they pop off once in a while too. I might resort to velcro strips soon.
Second, it could use more pockets. The large pockets on either end are great for carrying tanks and masks, but there's only one outside pocket for misc. stuff. I've been thinking of fabricating another pocket on the inside of the opening flap to store barrels since there really is no convenient place to put them.

Contrary to my criticisms, it's very sturdy and the rollers work well. You can really fill this thing up too. It takes a bit of careful planning to arrange everything with all the dividers but I've weighed mine down quite a bit.
I have not found the need for a telescoping handle but I'm also short (5'7") ;)

the zippers are very solid too. I know it sounds stupid but if you've ever used luggage or whatever with cheap zippers, you'll understand. there's also the option to use a pad-lock on the zippers to secure your gear. (although it doesn't prevent someone from taking off w/ your bag )

It's still pricey @ $100 new but not a bad deal when compared to some other brands.

My :twocents:,

I also own a large redz gear bag but I don't think they are made anymore. They came with a nice little foldable stool. Overall a very nice bag, big and sturdy. I started using a plastic tub instead of a gear bag since it takes up less room when traveling. :D

That is a pretty nice bag. Is it a big empty space in the main compartment? or any dividers? Or barrel compartments?

Also, what is a pastic tub? I tried googling it and it did not give me anything related :)

It has a couple dividers in the main compartment and barrel holders in the flap of the main compartment. The front of the bag is the mask compartment. Then zipper pouch on the outside of either side and a zipper pouch on the back of the back.

I meant like a rubbermaid 18 gallon storage container. LOL

haha, oh ok yeah a rubbermaid. I've seen a couple of people using that.

But the redz bag seems pretty nice. My small bag I use now is pretty lame and I can't eally fit everything in there.. not to mention I put my markers in another bag and my tools in another. So one bag might be nice.

I use a '07 Dye Navigator Gear Bag I picked up used for $100... The kid that sold it only had it for a month and decided he didn't need a bag that big...

Here's a link to show it's features : http://www.directpaintball.com/DYE-Navigator-Bags-P12026.aspx

You can probably find one on e-bay for pretty cheap...

sadly, i cant think of anything they sell for around $21 that i even want.... how sad

the girlfriend is not bothered by me picking up a new bag (especially seeing the price compared to what ANY other bag out there costs)
so im thinking of ordering one, unless i can find a better deal from a company whos shipping department HASNT been drinking the bongwater

its free shipping for orders over 100$ (i think that was mentioned earlier)

i found if i add a lense for my mask (I3) it will take it just barely over the limit, add something to make your order over $100 and try again, if they will ship to you for free, problem solved, if they wont, we will work something out

Yeah the free shipping over 100$ is only for CONUS. I sent them an e-mail asking if they could cut on shipping if I spend 100 US, but I am pretty sure they'll say no.. but we'll see.

True, I was thinking the exact same thing. It seems to be one big compartment in the middle.. like a hockey bag. So I was wondering if there was some sort of separation.

I've been considering a paintball gear bag too. I've been using a big Stanley toolbox on wheels for the past 3 years, but with uneven terrain at the field, the darn thing always falls down. Besides, I've outgrown the toolbox and now have too much stuff to lug around.

That's what I don't like with my current NXE gear bag. It's just one big compartment where i throw everything on top of everything. I'm looking forward to seeing what this new Empire bag has to offer. A little more organization of my gear is what i need and the 3 padded gun cases is a major plus!! Right now i can only fit one gun in my bag. Cable brought to my attention that the black Empire bag only comes with 2 gun cases. Something you may want to think about when buying one of these. I ordered the digi camo.

Just one more day til it comes and I should have pics up of the new gear bag to show how the inside looks like. Oh...i did buy an extra Profiler in order to get the free shipping. It was something I was going to buy anyways at NPPL HB this year...really.

I'm glad the pics helped w/ your decision making. The material on the Empire gearbag is not as thick as the NXE bag nor are the zippers as big. But I do like how much bigger the Empire bag is and its divided compartments. The gearbag only comes with 2 removable gun cases....I thought it came with 3? I read the description again and it says it holds up to 3 guns in padded cases and this is true. Also, the padded barrel case and light weight Empire gym bag is a nice add-on. I'm sure there are better gear bags out there.....but not for $80. So if you're looking for a $150-$200 gearbag, like Zak said..."this bag is a steal!" Just a little warning...this gearbag does take up some room in the car and garage.

Thanks Sundown for the thread and Cable for the find!

For $80, you cannot go wrong. I actually just picked up a DYE Navigator because I needed something with backpack straps. Also, I liked being able to have 2 separate bags that can snap together. The upper bag is much bigger than I expected. I was able to fit all my gear, except pods and clothes in there. I think this is a comprehensive list of what I was able to fit in the upper bag:

- 4 markers, 2 are in pockets attached to the bag, 2 are in gatwraps
- 3 tanks, 45, 68, 88
- 2 masks
- NXE 4 pod harness (no pods)
- Knee pads
- Arm pads
- 2 pair gloves
- 3 barrels full length in soft case
- 2 DYE Boom box barrel cases
- squeegees and tools in the side pocket w/ plenty of room left
- 4 loaders: Prophecy, 2 Revies, and a 150 reg hopper for pump

And I still have more room. I am planning to throw a 2nd harness in there.

Then in the bottom bag, I use more for organized storage of clothes (Which I have accumulated quite a bit of), 12 pods, shoes, chrono, stand for chrono, and alittle spare room there too.

For me, this was a great solution because I have a bunch of gear that I needed to organize, have mobile, but that I don't always bring with me to the field. But I paid a price for all of that. Figured I would throw my experience with the navigator out there for you guys.

I still think that the empire bag is a better deal, BTW. I probably should have just bought 2 of them. Oh well:rolleyes:

they probably saw the demand going up for the bag and raised prices to cash in.. cause a company that charges $105 to ship something to canada would NEVER... EVER do something as lowbrow as that

got mine and sundown's bags in today... his is fine, mine has a problem, ya know how it has the gunbag that attaches to the top? it does so via a zipper and two plastic clips well the installed the clips are INSIDE the bag.. but get this, they are in between the layers of fabric grrrrrrr

so now i get to figure out if this company will help me, send me a new top.. make me RMA the whole giant thing, or if i call pb solutions (empire) if they can hook my up by sending me a correct top

made in china FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and the best part.. they opened the box to inspect it BEFORE they shipped it to me, because the invoice is on the INSIDE flap!!!! soooo frustrating

I got my Empire bag last week. It's huge and fits everything I used to put in two big Rubbermaid bins. :)

Great deal... I'm glad I jumped on it. Thanks for the heads up! :D

Stupid question, but can this be solved by turning the bag inside out?

if it were only so easy, aside from that making the zipper be on the inside of the bag, the fact is, the plastic buckles are sandwiched BETWEEN the layers of fabric and padding.

the only way to fix it myself is to take it to a taylor, and have them take it apart and sew it back together again correctly

I really hope it works out for ya

This is Mark from Discount Paintball. Glad you guys like the bags. I have a couple things to comment on -

1. Tracker - I am sorry you had trouble. Any way you can take a picture of the problem? Please give us a call if you have not done so yet. Our phone number is 847-437-7400 ext #3. You can also call Empire/Paintball Solutions as they may have a closer location to you. When we ship these out we do not inspect them. Yes we open them to put the invoice in there but the bags do not even come out of the box.

2. The price had to go up. A sale can only last so long. Also, people were complaining about the high shipping price. As you know these things are huge and heavy. The price did go up $20 but we now offer free shipping for the continental USA. So it may be a good deal for those that only needed one bag or did not take advantage of our $100 free shipping offer before.

3. Sorry for interrupting the conversation! I just wanted to let you guys know we appreciate the business and we will stand behind our products. Let me know how I can help.

i called you guys the next morning, already have an RMA, and the bag got sent off this evening, its not an easy thing to catch, i just assumed that the bag had been inspected prior to shipping, due to the fact my invoice number had been written on the inside flap of both boxes

il will post some pics up so that you may see the issue, not a problem

a gree that the bags are big, bulky, and a pain in the butt to ship, but part of the problem i think, is your guys shipping calculator says the bags are 60lbs, they are 18, i know this because i just shipped sundown his bag.. unless ups has a default weight set in place for bags of a certain dimension.. but if thats the case, for certain items, might a reccomend an option to ship USPS priority? the item will usually arrive quicker, and will save you guys alot on shipping costs

Tracker - We will take care of the RMA as soon as it gets here. I just checked some of the bags that are still here and they are fine. We are now going to check the rest of them to make sure this does not happen again. Sorry you had to get a bad one. So you are sending just the top piece correct? I will make sure we save an urban one.

I will look into the shipping prices. Usually our shipping is within a few dollars either way. Since these are so big I think UPS dimensional weight takes over and that is why they are priced higher. I would have thought USPS would be more on such a large item. I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Also, Thank You to everyone that ordered from us. We appreciate the business!

yes i sent just the top peice

and i also know that it more than likely a completely random isolated incident, but i appreciate the fact your going to check out the rest of you stock for the sake of making sure it doesnt happen

as for shipping, USPS cost a sliver under half of the UPS quoted price for shipping to canada, was still expensive, but not nearly as much

There is a reason for that. US Postal Service doesnt charge an additional brokerage fee. I presume thats because of some sort of agreement between our nations mail and customs system and other countries.

When you ship overseas with UPS/FedEx/etc, you are going to pay that brokerage fee on top of their costs.

This likely has to do with the volume of packages that the USPS ships all over the world vs. the much lower volume of the other carriers.

There are other little nuances too, like insurance and coverage per country, tracking, etc that differ between the USPS and UPS/FedEx/DHL/etc and their advantages & disadvantages.

UPS also has whats called 'Oversized'. If an item is oversized in either weight or dimension Ive seen the cost go up by as much as double. Dont know if this bag does, but Ive shipped items by USPS Flat Rate specifically because of this UPS weight feature.

When we hear about a problem we like to prevent more customers from experiencing the same thing. It just makes sense to keep customers happy. We can't check everything we sell but when there is a problem we investigate the remaining inventory usually.

I just adjusted our dimensions since they were a little off. The dimensions we had made the box weight go up to 70lbs in the ups calculator. We usually leave them an inch or so bigger since the UPS package scanner sometimes is wrong. We have had UPS adjust our invoice from a box that was actaully 12x12x12 inches to 48x12x12. The reason for the error may have been two boxes were stacked on top of each other. That is the excuse they gave us. I also adjusted our weight down a few pounds. Now shipping should be more accurate.

For Canada we only use USPS. "UPS Canada" just does not like anything paintball related. A bag would probably be ok but anything with the word paintball gets inspected more they told us. Even USPS is having trouble with paintball equipment going into Canada. Canadian customs is prohibiting certain items. They confiscated a nitro tank of ours a few months back and gave us no way to recover it.

This is the beast I have http://www.actionvillage.com/040-270-0003

I had the mega BodyBag for couple of years. It doesn't have a telescoping handle like the Ratco bag.

I carry the following in it:

(2) 68/4500 tanks
(2) markers (PM7 and ULE mag)
(2) barrels (DW CF and Proto UL)
(2) loaders (Rotor and Halo)
Tool bag
Huge parts box
Radio
Paintball Caddy
(2) masks (Vents and Profilers)
(6) Dye locklids
Spec Ops vest (custom but Broadsword style)
NXe pod pack
Misc towels, lanyards, swabs, etc

The Ratco bag has all the features of the $150+ bags.

Well I just pick up their last one. I hope it works out better than the Bodybag I have.

Yep, The main problems I had with the Mega Bodybag was the lack of a spine and tow handle. The bag had a gracious amount of space but the plastic dividers always moved around and nothing really stayed where I felt it should have. The bag is very durable but the shortcoming can't make up for the low price.

From the reviews and photos of the Ratco, I already like it more.

Cool. The center small dividers (ones I use for my tanks and hoppers) move around too. I taped them to each other and the two longer outside dividers. Took care of that problem.
