This is the gist of a conversation/discussion going on with a group of players I know. Most of these guys are young, and new to the game. Much of their PB experience is playing outlaw ball on a field that they created.
Well, apparently, some of them are looking to venture out into the real word to see if its flat or round. :-) I was asked what BYOP field could I recommend that we go to on Sunday. My answer - NONE.
There are three BYOP fields in the NJ area within one hour driving distance. Here were my comments;
Field #1 and field #2 (same company, two different locations)
-Cheap
-BYOP
-Reffing presence is NON-EXISTANT at either location.
-Playing fields can be hit or miss depending on the mood of the people running the place. Field #1 is more known for being 'shady', field #2 is usually the better choice.
-Poorly stocked, over priced proshop. Do not expect to get much out of them if you need help. I have found that both places can barely keep their own field equipment operational - including the fill stations
Field #3
-Cheap
-BYOP
-Excellent airball field
-Other 3 fields are very poor
-Usually jammed pack with tourny teams, many of whom are sponsored by the field, waiting to play on the airball field. Usually means a lengthy wait between games, and having to play established teams.
-Having to play on the other 3 fields, all of which are small, poorly set up, and BELOW THE WATER TABLE of the nearby lake usually result in alot of aggrivation, mud, and unhappy players.
-well stocked proshop with reasonable pricing.
-Decent ref staff last.
So I am awaiting on their decision. Im pretty much in desperate need of my paintball fix, having sat out for the better part of 5 weeks now.
There are some excellent fields in the 1 to 2 hr driving distance. However, they are the "$80/case" fields, and is prohibitively expensive for more of the players I know. Especially the younger "I need 3 cases" crowd.
Is this situation normal in the rest of the country?
