This is the gist of a conversation/discussion going on with a group of players I know. Most of these guys are young, and new to the game. Much of their PB experience is playing outlaw ball on a field that they created.

Well, apparently, some of them are looking to venture out into the real word to see if its flat or round. :-) I was asked what BYOP field could I recommend that we go to on Sunday. My answer - NONE.

There are three BYOP fields in the NJ area within one hour driving distance. Here were my comments;

Field #1 and field #2 (same company, two different locations)
-Cheap
-BYOP
-Reffing presence is NON-EXISTANT at either location.
-Playing fields can be hit or miss depending on the mood of the people running the place. Field #1 is more known for being 'shady', field #2 is usually the better choice.
-Poorly stocked, over priced proshop. Do not expect to get much out of them if you need help. I have found that both places can barely keep their own field equipment operational - including the fill stations

Field #3
-Cheap
-BYOP
-Excellent airball field
-Other 3 fields are very poor
-Usually jammed pack with tourny teams, many of whom are sponsored by the field, waiting to play on the airball field. Usually means a lengthy wait between games, and having to play established teams.
-Having to play on the other 3 fields, all of which are small, poorly set up, and BELOW THE WATER TABLE of the nearby lake usually result in alot of aggrivation, mud, and unhappy players.
-well stocked proshop with reasonable pricing.
-Decent ref staff last.

So I am awaiting on their decision. Im pretty much in desperate need of my paintball fix, having sat out for the better part of 5 weeks now.

There are some excellent fields in the 1 to 2 hr driving distance. However, they are the "$80/case" fields, and is prohibitively expensive for more of the players I know. Especially the younger "I need 3 cases" crowd.

Is this situation normal in the rest of the country?

Could be worse... The only nice field period in my area shut down:( Too bad too, best job I've ever had:cool: All other fields in the immediate area can hardly be called fields...

The same is true here. Only one real field to speak of and it's run by Military guys. So mosy of the shady stuff doesn't happen.

green.. if you are near chicgo, there is CPX.. I played there recently and really had a good time. I have no idea what their paint costs are, but I played pump all day, with air and co2 fills, and 500 paintballs for $50. Hell that was a great day. They have a really nice pro shop, aggressive refereeing, and decent grounds.

Just thought I would throw that in.

Wallyworld and the like are killing the paintball fields & the vast experience gap aint helping.....my opinion of course.

A group of buddies can get equivalent gear and paint at Wallyworld for a very cheap price ( 40 for paint, 65.00 a gun ), go to somoenes 5 acre back yards or chunk of property and play against each other and have fun....

Or....

they can go to a field that will have who knows how many people showing up for the day to play, they can spend 60-80 bucks a case on paint, some of the rental markers will outshoot the stuff they just bought, and they can get shot up by the field regulars and more experienced players for the day.....

Which would you choose?

Scott, I pm'd you about the field, but if you're gonna be driving an hour or 2 you really should hit up accurate. The owners are cool, reffing is good, and prices are great. Let me know what you're doin we'll be there sunday

Our feild is BYOP (started that this year) with a 10$ cover charge, 5$ for a 98 rental and 5$ for CO2 all day. It's great, but there is only a game every two weeks unfortunatly since the owner does it on his free time.
