So I went and played for Desert Edge this last weekend at the UWL finals in SC Village as part of their Tactical 2 team. I had a blast, aside from the 11 hour drive stuck in the cramped backseat of a small suburban. Our team Tactical 2 which had only played together 2 times prior to the event went 4-0 and made it to the finals, where we played DE Tactical 1 and beat them. So it was pretty sick.

My thoughts on the event:

1. Format: I really like the format, very aggressive and fast paced. I don't think there was a moment where I wasn't dealing with either a gunfight or taking a flag. So that was awesome.

2. Teams: For the most part the teams were very honest players, I would spray through some thick foliage just trying to spook out some players and a guy would stand up and call himself out. With the exclusion of 2-3 teams this was the case. Those 2-3 teams however, were the biggest cheaters I have ever dealt with. We even had the captain of one of the teams tell us "If we have to cheat to win, we will." another team said "All sports have penalties for breaking the rules, and we accept the risks, but if it gets us the win then thats all that matters."

It made me sick, when I started paintball, if you got caught blatantly wiping or playing on you weren't infracted, you were kicked out of the field/event.

Other than these 2-3 teams, the vast majority of players I had a great deal of respect for. Very honest like the Muddy Water Boys, Blacklight Co., etc... very honorable players and I'd play with them again and again.

3. The marker: So I had to play with a Planet Eclipse gun, lucky me, Dan from DE let me try both his Ego10 & his Geo2. Geo2 I think I'm in love. That gun shoots ropes, it has one of the straightest ropes I have ever fired. If I make the team officially I think I'm going to go with the Geo2. Ego10, honestly I wasn't as impressed, the Vikings I've shot were far smoother & since I've already purchased a Valhalla Viking, I'm going to go with the Geo2 for my team gun.

4. .50 Cal: I had the misfortune to play with .50 in our skills division. I can now speak from personal experience that .50 is inferior in ever single way to .68. The range difference is significant, at least 30% less than .68. The paint doesn't break. I hit a guy from 10 feet away with 10 well placed shots, all bounced. When it does break it's so small it isn't always clear that it was a hit. Oh, and Bob Long is fully of crap that it shoots through foliage better, it's worse.

Anyway had a great time overall.

UWL really looks interesting as a mixture of competitive woodsball with a little dousing of modern equipment. The format really intrigued me when I first heard about it. I watched a little of it when there was a competition going on at The Badlandz outside of Chicago a few months back. The sight of all those Autocockers warmed the little cockles of my heart.

Yeah those guys mostly play the skills division. There's actually a lot of Mag users. The Blacklight Co. are all mag shooters, and Muddy Water Boys primarily shoot mags as well.

I play in the UWL as well and it is a great format. Its a though back to the old days but there are some issues and they need to be worked through. I missed finals but I heard it was a good time in general.

It seems like a great mix of todays tech with yester years style of play. The one thing that gets me is that the scout is able to leave the station early. IDK if I like that or not.

They only get to leave 10 seconds early, at best getting them halfway down the field. The other team also has a scout, I like it, it adds a lot of strategy.

Great overview of the event.

I am personally on the edge, debating is .50 cal and .68 cal is gonna be a game changer or not. From my experiences i think that .68 will still stand on its own.

This event is a really fun event, coming from a (Rampd)and(Paintballerschoice) photographer point of view I think that players have a really good time playing UWL. Its a taste of not only breakout and fire fights like you do in tournament but skills and strategy that you have to use to accomplish the win.
