Im going to use it to play hopefully loud and good quality hip hop music along with rock. I want to take it to the beach, or out on the porch for a party and thats about it.

Bose & Sony are both really good options for stereo quality.

hmm, i dont have a ton of experience with this, however if your gonna take something to the beach, the cheaper the better, bose by most peoples admissions makes good quality product, but its friggin expensive, and i dunno about you, but the general rule of thumb fr me has always been, dont take anything to the beach you dont mind accidentally leaving there
what i use, when im in the hunt for portable music is, the boombox setup for my sirius starmate replay, it was expensive at the time, but i love having the ability of taking my satellite radio with me places, its like an mp3 player but better,
as for recommendations, i say, anything thats cheap, and has a line-in for an mp3 player (or an ipod connector if thats your persuasion) cd player is optional if you ask me

To be considered a "real boom box" it must run off of 8 D batteries, and have a tape deck on the front :D

You need this.

End of discussion :D
Seriously though, don't waste your money on Bose, find a good Sony or Panasonic and enjoy it while you can.

If I were going to buy one, it would likely be something like one of these.
